Joyful Aging at Burlington Creek

Category: Health & Wellness

Author: Blair Nikes, Director of Wellness

Aging is a natural and inevitable part of life that brings unique challenges. As people grow older, they experience increased physical and emotional major life changes—retirement, loss of loved ones, health challenges, and decreased independence. These can be stressful and difficult, but knowing how to handle and grow with these changes is often the key to healthy aging.

At The Burlington Creek Senior Living, we understand the key ingredient to coping with the challenges of aging is the ability to continue to find meaning and joy in life. The activities you enjoyed may change over time and may not be suitable as you get older. Finding new hobbies, picking up long-neglected ones, or learning new skills can be an exciting, new adventure.

Some older adults find comfort in connecting with their community and loved ones. Community work can be a great way to utilize and pass on your skills. Attending local events or volunteering for a great cause are other ways to feel connected.

One of the most important coping mechanisms is acknowledging and expressing your feelings. Many aging adults have a hard time showing emotions, believing it is inappropriate and weak; however, burying your feelings can lead to anger, resentment, and depression. Don’t deny what you’re going through. Find healthy ways to process your feelings by talking with a close friend or writing in a journal.

Welcoming New Residents: Dining Together and Building Relationships

A new experience residents may have when joining our community is dining with others. Many new residents come from living alone at home, and shared meals can bring a sense of purpose and fulfillment and the chance to build healthy relationships while improving nutritional intake.

The burden of daily tasks is also lifted. Tasks that once were easy may become challenging with age. With staff assistance for laundry, cleaning, medication management, and meal preparation, residents can focus on participating in events that bring happiness and joy.

Introducing new residents to the community involves small, thoughtful steps. We introduce them to the dining room for meals and pair them with residents with similar interests for one-on-one interactions. This helps build new, trusting relationships and encourages participation in community events.

Identifying residents struggling with changes involves observing subtle signs. Refusal of care, such as neglecting hygiene and appearance, often indicates depression and uncertainty. Changes in meal participation, such as reduced nutritional intake or altered dining locations, are also key indicators that a resident may face underlying issues. Recognizing these signs allows us to provide the necessary support and care.

By finding ways to cope with the difficulties of aging, it gives one the ability always to see the silver lining. When facing major challenges, try to look at them as opportunities for personal growth. It’s not just about adding years to your life. It’s about adding life to your years.
