Do you remember the days when the lunch bell rang, signaling the excitement of discovering the treasures hidden in your lunch box? Join me as I take a trip down memory lane, revisiting some items—some I’d rather forget—and the iconic snacks and treats that fueled my childhood adventures and satisfied my youthful cravings.
Growing up, I preferred packed lunches because they were made with my mom’s good cooking. Even when it wasn’t a full meal, I loved the sandwiches she made. My favorite was a turkey, ham, and cheese sandwich with all the fixings. It’s still my go-to for a late-night snack. As much as I liked to take my lunch, I usually had to buy it due to family finances.
If I could create one school lunch item from scratch, it would be spaghetti and meatballs. Making it from scratch brings out better flavor and presentation than the canned sauce and overcooked pasta I ate as a child. The food at school was never appetizing.
The ultimate school lunch menu would include scratch-made spaghetti and meatballs, country green beans, cornbread, apple pie à la mode, and Fanta orange soda.
I always incorporate all the essential food groups to ensure a well-balanced and nutritious meal. The lunch packaging is also important, as it helps you stay balanced with your diet or way of eating.
I’d love to see biscuits and gravy loaded with sausage, fluffy pancakes, and waffles topped with peanut butter for a breakfast box.
Even though we’ve traded our lunch boxes for grown-up alternatives and our tastes have evolved, the nostalgia of those beloved treats still reminds us of the innocence and delight of youth. I hope you can find some classic favorites and discover new tempting treats every time you visit The Burlington Creek Senior Living Bistro or Country Kitchen and that you never stop making culinary memories.
